The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Housing through Food for the Poor: Food for the Poor builds houses for those in extreme poverty in Central America and the Caribbean at the rate of $3600 for a single-unit house with sanitation and $7200 for a double-unit house with sanitation and water. An anonymous donor has made a very generous offer and challenge: They will cover the difference of a single-unit house, or, if the full $3600 is reached, match those funds for a double-unit house. If you would like to be a part of funding a FftP house through Saint John's, please either send a check to the office, or put one in the offering plate, and memo it “FftP House.”  Donations will be accepted through August 26, 2018.

Do you ever wonder how Saint John's got its name? Do you marvel at the stained glass windows and from whence they came?   Does the uniqueness of the altar inspire you to learn more? Do you wish to learn more and to be able to share your knowledge with others?  If so, you will have that opportunity at Docent Training, scheduled for Saturday, September 15 at 9 AM in Trimble Hall being offered by our interpretive specialists, Ellen Collins and  Dan Meyer.  Please make your training reservation by emailing Bruce Massey at lbmassey@verizon.net.

Bester School: The Community Block Party to support Bester School children will be held on September 22nd. We've been asked to collect both children's and adult's clothing. A box for each has been placed in the Parish Hall.

Bester School Needs: School will begin soon and Bester still needs our help in providing underwear for its young children. The school greatly appreciates all our donations and all that we can do now and in the future.  Sizes needed are 4, 6, and 8 for both boys and girls. Please contact Lou Lamb or call her at 301-437-5704.  Thank you.

Would You Like to Usher: Saint John’s is looking for two or three people who would be willing to be on an usher team. If interested see Mike Mummert or contact him at mmummert66@gmail.com.

Van Driver and/or Supervisor: We are in need a a van driver and/or a Supervisor. This ministry provides transportation to who cannot get to Saint John’s without assistance. If you are interested or have any questions please contact Bob Speelman at 540-247-2482.

Secret Prayer Partners: Shhhh…The Secret is Almost Over!!!  The Parish Picnic, Sunday, September 9th is the day to reveal the Secret Prayer Partners for the past year!  Be sure to attend the 10:15 service and picnic at Leitersburg Ruritan Park that day.  The cat will be out of the bag at the picnic after the service!  Also, be sure to sign up for the next round of Prayer Partners by Sunday, August 26th!

Support Our Kids—Be a Prayer Partner: The Service and Outreach Commission would like to continue a quiet ministry that has been very successful over the past few years: our Secret Prayer Partners.  We believe that an essential part of supporting all our children is to pray for them.  This is a part of our baptismal vows and a way in which we strengthen our community life in Christ. As an adult member of the congregation, will you agree to “adopt” a child or a family of children and pray for them every day?  If you agree, we will give you the name of a child or family in the parish and ask for you to pray for each child every day.  We would ask you NOT to give gifts but please do send the children cards on special holidays such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and their birthday.  Please do not reveal yourself until the designated day which we will let you know in advance. Please join us in this endeavor.  You will find the forms to sign up for prayer partners for the 2018-2019 school year both in Soundings and on the table by the Antietam Street entrance.  Even if you were a partner last year, please sign up again so we know that you wish to continue your ministry. Please return your forms to the Parish Office, Stephny Lietuvnikas or Karla Davis.

Save the Date!  Quiet Day: The Daughters of the King will host a Quiet Day for the whole parish and any interested individuals on Saturday, Nov. 3rd from 9-3 in Saint Mary's Chapel. Fr. Todd will lead a series of meditations which will end with Holy Eucharist. Everyone is invited.  A continental breakfast will be offered.  Bring a bag lunch.   Hope to see you there!

To register, call the parish office.
