The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

Adult Forum: 9:00 a.m. in Saint Mary’s Chapel. Life in the Diaspora, Genesis 30, 37-50, Esther, Daniel 1-6. The dispersion of the Judeans – now know as “the Jews” – outside their homeland further threatens their assimilation.  We turn to the “tales of the Diaspora” and the heroic figures representing the wisdom tradition: Daniel and Mordecai. In Daniel and Esther we have a discussion of Jewish life outside Israel.  Next week: our final chapter, Apocalyptic Literature.  Join us for the final segment of our amazing trip through the Hebrew Scripture!

Youth Group meeting: Today, the youth will meet in the Parish Office at 11:45.  Come and share a pot-luck lunch and help us plan summer events, including the youth group pool party and our ice cream Sundae Sunday.  All youth in grades 6 and up are welcome to attend.

General Convention July 5 - 13: For those who would like to follow General Convention as it happens, you can access the GC Media Hub at: https://www.episcopalchurch.org/general-convention-2018-media-hub. It will include live-streaming of all legislative sessions, worship, media briefings, and many other things related to GC2018.

High Seas Expedition VBS: Come sail with us through Acts! VBS will be held next Sunday, July 15th through Wednesday the 18th from 5:30 to 8:15 pm. We will have a light supper, storytelling, and various activities for children ages 3-13, and an adult forum for parents/other interested adults.  Register online at: https://goo.gl/imNKa1 or fill out a paper form found at the Antietam Street entrance and hand in to Margaret Clinch.  Please register today, to allow enough supplies to be prepared!

Thomas Kennedy Memorial Park: The City of Hagerstown is building the Thomas Kennedy Memorial Park including a statue to him on East Baltimore Street near the synagogue.  The park is a memorial to Thomas Kennedy, (1776-1832), a Hagerstown-Washington County legislator who sponsored the so-called “Jew Bill,” which extended to Jews the same rights and privileges enjoyed by all Christians in the State of Maryland.  Kennedy, a Presbyterian himself, actually did not even know any Jews at the time he sponsored the bill, but he was offended that the constitution of Maryland required that individuals must be Christian to hold public office.  It took an eight-year fight before the bill was passed in the state legislature, but Kennedy persisted, insisting that religion was "a question which rests, or ought to rest, between man and his Creator alone."

The Service and Outreach Commission has recommended that Saint John's participate in a sponsorship drive, helping to build the tribute to religious freedom.  Depending on our collection level, Saint John's will be recognized in paver bricks, a marker or possibly a plaque.  If you are interested in donating, please provide a check to Saint John's with 'Kennedy Park' in the memo line.  Checks may be mailed or placed in the collection plate by Sunday, July 15.  Questions may be directed to Karla Davis or Bruce Massey.

Help Wanted:  Someone enthusiastic, fun, and patient who enjoys working with pre-teens and teens to train and surpervise the youth involved in the acolyte program. Would begin in the fall with training happily provided during the transition. Please speak with Chad and Kristy Gross or Father Todd for more information.
