Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

Shawl Ministry will meet following the 10:15 service in Trimble Hall.  This meeting is open to anyone interested.  People may bring their own projects and needles and yarn will be available for anyone willing to start something new. Teachers will also be available for those that do not know how to knit.

You are invited! Sunday morning, following the 8 O’clock service in St. Mary’s Chapel, you are invited to join in adult examination of contemporary issues facing Christians in today’s world.  Watch leading theologians, authors and church leaders wrestle with ideas and concepts with which we all struggle.

Be a part of the vigorous conversation!  This week is the second part of a two-part program on the history of the Episcopal Church.  Where did we come from and what has made us what we are today?  Cradle Episcopalian or from another faith tradition, this series will help you understand who we are and why we do what we do.  Everyone is welcome. Join us next Sunday for a lively discussion on “the meaning of Pentecost”, and Bishop John Shelby Spong’s new book, Biblical Literalism: A Gentile Heresy!

Vacation Bible School Planning Meeting: The planning meeting will be held on Sunday, June 26th, at 11:30 in St Mary’s Chapel.  Anyone interested in volunteering this year for VBS is invited to attend, or to contact Margaret Clinch at youthmin.stjohns@myactv.net.

For all Parents with fast growing Children!  Summer is the time for you to collect all the gently worn clothing that your children have outgrown.  Please bring these clothes to Trimble Hall and place them in the box.  All clothing collected will be taken to our adopted school – Bester Elementary where these clothes are desperately needed by indigent families.  If you have any questions please call Lou Lamb at telephone number 301-437-5704 or Bill Alexander at 301-665-9322.  The Bester children will be most grateful!

Save the Dates!  Vacation Bible School for this Summer will be hosted from Sunday July 17th through Wednesday July 20th.  Our theme for this year is Abundance Orchard.  Contact Margaret Clinch if you are interested in volunteering with any aspect of the VBS week.

Van Driver and Van Supervisor Opportunity:  We have two openings for individuals on our rotation list of van drivers. Our van drivers provide  a service to those who need transportation to and from Sunday services. One is needed now and the other will be needed beginning in August.  Additionally we need a replacement for our van supervisor. The duties of the supervisor are to coordinate the Sunday van trips for those needing transportation to and from services and also sees that the van is properly maintained. Please contact Bob Speelman at 540-247-2482 or rwspeelman@mail.com, if you would like to become a part of this vital outreach service.

The Rector Search Committee Update:  The Rector Search Committee has certainly been busy these last few weeks! In total, eleven members have participated in recent site visits, some of which took our members on long plane trips.  One more site visit team is preparing to travel the weekend of June 11-12. We ask your prayers for safe travel, and for a clear head and heart as we listen to God's guidance. At the latest whole group meeting, the results of the site visits were discussed, and because of that, prayerful and challenging decisions were made. We are in the process of narrowing down the candidates and have begun making plans for the first candidate visit to St. John's. There is much which must be done when this happens, including a meeting with the Bishop, a tour of the church, and some social time and further questions with search committee members. While it may be tempting to want to ask search committee members their opinions on the candidate(s) who may be called here for a visit, it is at this time, perhaps more than ever, that confidentiality and discretion must be observed. We are very excited moving forward, and we feel that any of the final candidates would make an excellent addition to St. John's. Thank you again for your support and prayers.

Gift Cards: The Service and Outreach Commission will be selling gift cards for Martins and Weis Grocery Markets after the 8:00 AM and 10:15 services each Sunday at the Antietam Street entrance.   The commission will receive 5% from the sales of the gift certificates.  These proceeds will be used to sponsor mission projects.    You can help Service and Outreach obtain its goals by purchasing gift cards to be used at all Martin/Weis locations.   Thank you for your patronage!

Bester School Needs: If you can help by providing underwear for ages 4-8, please contact Louise (Lou) Lamb at louisegl@myactv.net or 301-437-5704.
