Eighth Sunday after Pentecost
Adult Forum: 9:00 a.m. in Saint Mary’s Chapel. Apocalyptic Literature. Isaiah 24-27, 56-66, Zechariah 9-14, Daniel 7-12. Apocalyptic literature is a combination of a variety of other literatures. From the prophets it takes the idea of the concern to inculcate moral values and that God is active in history. From wisdom literature it takes speculation on the universe. It raises questions of theodicy. From novels it pulls from characters that somehow come to terms with their existence.
High Seas Expedition VBS Starts Today: Come sail with us through Acts! VBS will be held this week beginning today from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. through Wednesday, July 18th. We will have a light supper, storytelling, and various activities for children ages 3-13, and an adult forum for parents/other interested adults.
Thomas Kennedy Memorial Park: The City of Hagerstown is building the Thomas Kennedy Memorial Park including a statue to him on East Baltimore Street near the synagogue. The park is a memorial to Thomas Kennedy, (1776-1832), a Hagerstown-Washington County legislator who sponsored the so-called “Jew Bill,” which extended to Jews the same rights and privileges enjoyed by all Christians in the State of Maryland. Kennedy, a Presbyterian himself, actually did not even know any Jews at the time he sponsored the bill, but he was offended that the constitution of Maryland required that individuals must be Christian to hold public office. It took an eight-year fight before the bill was passed in the state legislature, but Kennedy persisted, insisting that religion was "a question which rests, or ought to rest, between man and his Creator alone."
The Service and Outreach Commission has recommended that Saint John's participate in a sponsorship drive, helping to build the tribute to religious freedom. Depending on our collection level, Saint John's will be recognized in paver bricks, a marker or possibly a plaque. If you are interested in donating, please provide a check to Saint John's with 'Kennedy Park' in the memo line. Checks must be placed in the collection plate today. Questions may be directed to Karla Davis or Bruce Massey.
